Bircham Social Club gig to raise funds for young sailor

A gig is being held on Friday night to raise funds to help a Great Bircham teenage sailor take part in the Atlantic Challenge International in the USA next year.

West Norfolk band The Fried Pirates and support The Browns are giving their time for free at the gig, being held at Bircham Social Club. Doors open at 7pm with the music starting half an hour later.

Young sailor Rose Edmonds, 19, learnt to sail at Snettisham Beach Sailing Club and has gone on to qualify as a dinghy instructor at the club, where The Fried Pirates founder Adrian Tebbutt is commodore.

Rose has been selected to take part in the Atlantic Challenge International in Maine, sailing GB gig Intégrité, a replica 18th-century captain’s gig.

She said: “This will be an experience unlike any other and provides a great opportunity for me to learn new skills that I can bring back to my sailing and teaching.”

To cover the cost of travel to and from the training camp in Dorset, the return journey to Maine, and food en route to Maine and back, Rose has to raise a minimum of £2,500, with £1,000 already raised. Atlantic Challenge GB fundraise to cover all other costs.

Adrian said: “Rose has worked hard to get accepted on this programme and it will be an amazing adventure for her. We want to do whatever we can to support her on this journey.”

The Browns, from North Norfolk, are currently receiving rave reviews for their new album which features expressive songs with heavenly harmonies. The Fried Pirates perform a range of Americana, folk and roots music.
