Andy Tyler reviews The Guildhall Singers’ ‘There is Sweet Music’ concert in King’s Lynn

Reviewer Andy Tyler shares his thoughts on a recent concert at a Lynn church…

There is obviously great demand locally for sweet music, as this was certainly evident at The Guildhall Singers’ recent very well-attended concert given at All Saints Church, Hillington Square.

The concert, mainly consisting of songs in some way connected with Shakespeare, was a fitting celebration and tribute to the Bard, and was indeed entitled ‘There is Sweet Music’.

The Singers, directed by Charlotte Sinassi-Hill and accompanied by David Hill, consisted of just over a dozen experienced members, and gave sensitive, subtle, and always fresh-sounding interpretations of pieces by such diverse composers as Vaughan Williams, (the two parts of his famous ‘Serenade to Music’ beginning and ending the concert), Orlando di Lasso, John Wilbye, Benjamin Britten, Gerald Finzi, Nils Lindberg, Charles Villiers Stanford, (a recent BBC Radio 3 composer of the week), and Charles Wood.

Many of the songs performed featured Shakespeare’s words familiar to us, others not so.

Texts by other authors were used, and it was a pleasure to have the opportunity to hear arrangements of two songs by the choir’s director: Fancie, originally set by Britten, and Music, When Soft Voices Die, originally set by Charles Wood.

The Guildhall Singers were formed in 2019 by a group of experienced local singers led by Helen Herbert, and enjoy a diverse repertoire suitable to a small ensemble.

They have performed in several venues locally and will perform again in the Autumn.

All Saint’s Church, Hillington Square, Lynn has excellent new facilities and welcomes local groups to use it for future events and concerts.

Do contact the church to find out further details.
