That’s Entertainment: Andy Tyler discusses upcoming events in and around King’s Lynn, including volunteering, book recommendation and fleamarket

In his weekly That’s Entertainment column, Andy Tyler looks at some exciting upcoming events…

I am aware we are always mentioning the weather in conversation, but it has truly been a great few days weather-wise.

Let’s hope it continues to encourage us to get out and about and enjoy the great outdoor entertainment taking place locally and visit places of interest and beauty here and farther afield.

Talking of the great outdoors, I attended a fascinating talk recently, organised by The King’s Lynn Civic Society and given by Sarah Spooner, associate professor in Landscape History at UEA, entitled: Georgian Pleasure Gardens and Urban Open Spaces.

Sarah’s informative lecture gave much information about the world’s first public pleasure gardens, and the full audience was particularly interested in facts about Lynn’s Walks, its history and formation.

Volunteers to support local organisations always seem to be needed and are greatly appreciated. Certainly, Lynn’s Civic Society and True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum are looking for helpers currently, so if you have some spare time, why not engage in some volunteering?

Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse, Museum of Norfolk Life, states visitors can enjoy a great day out, whatever the weather. Opening times are 10am until 5pm daily, until October 26, and there are many varied events and activities to enjoy throughout the year.

There is a cafe open or visitors can bring a picnic to enjoy in the superb surroundings. For all the details, visit: www.gressenhall.norfolk.gov.uk

Don’t forget it’s a great time of the year to visit some of our great historic homes and halls. Holkham, Houghton, Sandringham, Oxburgh, Raynham, Peckover House and others are very well worth a visit. For current information, visit the venues' websites.

A movie to look out for, recently released, is entitled Mr Burton, and is about the early life of famous Welsh actor Richard Burton.

How the actor’s talents were nurtured and encouraged by his teacher and mentor, Philip Burton, and their close relationship is explored in the film.

I’ve always been a lover of Shakespeare, so this week my book recommendation is Michael Rosen’s recently published Pocket Shakespeare, described as A Beginner’s Guide to The Best Bits Of The Bard, illustrated by Chris Riddell.

Anyone encouraging folk to enjoy Shakespeare has my vote - A winner I see before me!

And so to music. Music in the Burnhams is holding a Music Supper Club tomorrow evening at 7pm. Songs and Stories are promised performed by three young, talented entertainers. The venue is Burnham Overy Village Hall. To book, contact Marian on: 07989 177079

If you are a fan of The Clash, you are invited to a session at Lynn Library where a recording of London Calling will be played and discussed. The date for your diary is Monday, April 14, start time is 5.30pm.

If you’re in the Sedgeford area this Sunday, their Spring Fayre is being held between 10am and 3pm at the village hall. Entry is free and there is plenty to enjoy. Refreshments are, of course, available!

The West Norfolk Association of National Trust Members is holding a talk given by Jill Hall entitled Flying in the 50s and 60s this Sunday. Jill’s a former air hostess, so the event should be of interest. Start time is 2.30pm, and the venue is South Wootton Village Hall. A fee of £8 is payable for entry if you’re not a member of the association.

A reminder that the next fleamarket held at Lynn’s Alive Corn Exchange will be open between 9am and 3pm on Saturday, April 26. As usual, there’s plenty of bargains to be had, no doubt!

I’m out and about myself next week, having a break, so my next column will appear on Friday, April 25. A happy Easter to all my readers. Enjoy the holiday!
