Invest in a Miner miracle, West Norfolk musician takes to writing
A local musician has branched out into writing and is hoping to have success with a ground-breaking project that combines the two.
Damian Carruthers, originally from Snettisham, and now dividing his time between his mother’s home in Hunstanton and his studio in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, is seeking to crowdfund the release of the children’s book he has written, which will also come out in audio form complete with music.
Damian, 39, has written a book aimed at four- to 12-year-olds, called The Cheese Miner On The Moon. Whilst being an action/adventure book set in space, the book also carries a strong message that we cannot continue to treat our planet in the way that we do without consequence.
Snettisham is featured as a location in the book, the story of which had its genesis when Damian found himself telling a tall tale about how the Moon was made from cheesecake.
Damian, a guitarist whose band is called Serenade The Stars, said: “So far I have self-funded everything, it has cost me about £3,000, but we need that final push and am looking to raise £1,000.
“What I am trying to do is bring the two sides together, music and writing. I have searched but found nothing like it. What I hope to do is release the audio version with original music written by me by my band on download and with an initial pressing of 500 CDs too.
“I have based the main character on myself. When I was young I had a real fascination with the stars. I grew up wanting to be a pilot.
“It is about a child who signs up to mine the moon after hearing that it is made of cheese. I describe it as an adventure of a lifetime but it has an environmental message and I see it as a metaphor for how we are tending to treat planet Earth.”
The book is illustrated by Jade Crundwell, a partially-sighted artist from Surrey, that Damian met through the internet.
Damian said he had received offers from publishers but preferred to go down the self-publishing route so he could maximise the reward for his endeavours.
