King’s Lynn Players' Calendar Girls The Musical by Gary Barlow and Tim Firth has knitted prop for Guildhall of St George staging

Lynn Housden from Lynn has taken up the challenge and knitted a large prop for The King’s Lynn Players' next production, Calendar Girls The Musical being staged at The Guildhall of St George from November 16 to 19.

Director Sharon Fox said: “As many will know each Calendar Girl has to hide their bodies behind various items including the infamous Belgian buns! Leading character Jessie is a keen knitter and is seen throughout the show with needles in hand … so we needed a real knitter to help us out.”

She added: “Local knitter Lynn Housden had done a beautiful job of knitting a large piece to cover actress Carol Storey’s modesty. Almost a decade ago we staged the play of Calendar Girls and she has recreated a similar prop we used back then.”

Players publicity officer Tom Clarke added: “The musical follows the characters on an emotional journey and we hope that audiences will love the true story of a group of ordinary women living in Yorkshire who achieve something extraordinary!

“We are also proud to partner with Blood Cancer U.K. to collect money for this worthwhile cause, linked in with the story of the Calendar Girls, after every performance of the show.”

Gary Barlow and Tim Firth’s tale is inspired by the true story of a group of ordinary women living in Yorkshire who achieve something extraordinary. It begins when one of the women’s husbands is diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.

He sadly dies just a few months after he starts treatment. In the months that follow the friends get to work making a ‘nude’ calendar to raise enough to buy a new sofa for the hospital where he was treated. The calendar attracts international press attention and the friends end up raising millions for Bloodwise (formerly Lymphoma & Lymphoma Research).

Based on the 2003 film, and with unforgettable songs, each performance continues to add to the millions already raised for charity and proves that there is no such thing as an ordinary woman.
