Groan Ups, at the Theatre Royal Norwich is a new comedy from Mischief Theatre who brought us the hugely popular, The Play That Goes Wrong, so expectations were high.

This one takes a wry look at growing up - do we choose who we become or is our destiny already all sorted? Discuss!

The play follows a group of school friends at primary school, high school and the dreaded school reunion, exploring their relationships, academic careers and personalities. As you might remember from your own school days, there is always the clever one, the naughty one, the outsider and the high maintenance one and this play has them all and a couple more.

Whilst the subject matter may be heavy and makes us think back to how we survived or thrived at school, the delivery is almost slapstick with some great comic timing and terrific one liners, and we can all relate to much of it.

I especially liked Yolanda Ovide’s portrayal of Moon, the privileged one who can’t quite knuckle down to anything concrete but somehow oozes middle class over-confidence.

As any parent knows only too well, children can provide us with plenty of laughs, often unintentionally, and this show certainly doesn’t disappoint. And I’d say it is definitely one that teachers will especially enjoy.
