King's Lynn theatre group production lines up Calendar Girls

A theatre group in Lynn are straight in with the next production, filling in their to get traditional autumn slot with a musical.

The King's Lynn Players are seeking interested performers for readings of Calendar Girls - The Musical written by Gary Barlow, of Take That fame, and Tim Firth

The show will be staged in November and readings and auditions are in the next couple of weeks.

Tom Clarke, publicity officer, who recently played the lead in the company's recent production of Sunset Boulevard, said: "A reading of the script where we will play the soundtrack too will take place on Monday, June 6, at 7.30pm at London Road Methodist Church.

"Workshops will follow on Wednesday, June 8 at 7.30pm at London Road Methodist Church, Monday, June 13 at 7.30pm at The Salvation Army Hall and Wednesday, June 15 at 7.30pm at London Road Methodist Church.

"Auditions take place on Sunday, June 19 from 10.30am at Lynn Academy of Dance and Song, Paxman Road.

"Anyone who is keen to take part can attend a reading, workshops and an audition. It is open to anyone, old or young, new members or existing members alike.

"This is going to be a blockbuster production for the Players and you want to be a part of it."

Director Sharon Fox said: "We have traditionally staged our big musicals in the autumn and we are so pleased we can now reclaim our slot with the smash hit Calendar Girls - The Musical with music by Gary Barlow and script by the writer of the original play, Tim Firth.

"We are looking for a wide age range of ladies plus teenagers and men to make up the families of the Calendar Girls.

"The music clearly has a familiar Take That style and is so catchy.

"We staged the play almost 10 years ago and it was a total sell out."

The smash-hit musical Calendar Girls is inspired by the true story of a group of ordinary women who achieve something extraordinary.

One of their husbands is diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and he sadly dies just a few months after he starts treatment.

In the months that follow the friends get to work making a nude calendar to raise enough to buy a new sofa for the hospital where he was treated.

The calendar attracts international press attention and the friends end up raising millions of pounds.

Based on the 2003 film, starring Julie Walters and with unforgettable songs, each performance continues to add to the millions already raised for charity and proves that there is no such thing as an ordinary woman.

The show will run from November 16-19, at the Guildhall of St George in Lynn.
