Memory Lane: Pied Piper performers rehearse at Shouldham

By Chris Hornby

Youngsters at Shouldham School took to the stage in April 1977 for two performances of the timeless tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

All the pupils at the school – more than 50 in total – were involved in the production which was enjoyed by parents and friends.

The youngsters donned colourful costumes of rats, townsfolk, children and councillors to follow the Pied Piper (Tracey Mitchell) on to the stage.

As depicted in the legend, the people of Hamelin were in a terrible way with the town overrun by rats, before the Pied Piper tells the town mayor he has a solution to the problem.

But when the mayor reneged on his promise to pay the Piper there was trouble in store.
