Village Farm in Houghton inviting public as part of annual open day with tractor riders and tours

Farms across Britain will be opening their gates to the public for a “great family day out”.

This is part of an annual open day, which is this Sunday, offering visitors the chance to see agriculture at first hand, to discover where their food comes from, how it is produced, and to meet the people responsible.

So, save Sunday in your diary to pay a visit to Village Farm in Houghton.

Open Farm Sunday is a great family day out and offers a unique chance to learn more about all that farmers do and to show your support.

On the day, the team at Village Farm will be on hand to tell you more about the farming industry, show you how your food is produced, and what is being done to care for the countryside.

The farm will be open from 11am-4pm and visitors will be able to learn more about its dairy herd of Jersey cows, watch them at milking time, and machinery displays - along with tractor and trailer rides around the estate of Houghton Hall.

Throughout the day, there will be guided tours around the farm, which are a perfect way to discover all about British farming for yourself.

Annabel Shackleton, Open Farm Sunday manager, said: “Open Farm Sunday is a wonderful opportunity for visitors of all ages to get closer to farming and the people that make it happen.

“Each event is unique, each farm is different and every farmer too, but what they all share is a passion for farming, amazing expertise and a commitment to farming with nature and caring for the countryside.

“Some farms have been passed down through the generations, others are managed by those who have chosen farming as their career; each has its own special story to tell and Open Farm Sunday is the ideal chance to come and hear it.”
