King's Lynn Alive Corn Exchange presents Norfolk Symphony Orchestra concert featuring composers Carl Nielsen and Edvard Grieg
The Norfolk Symphony Orchestra continues its Travels with Friends season with a concert entitled Northern Lights.
Taking place at Alive Corn Exchange on Sunday, March 19 at 3.30pm, conductor Steve Bingham and the ensemble will begin with Carl Nielsen’s gloriously evocative work A Fantasy Journey to the Faroe Islands.
This piece combines Faroese folk melodies to help depict the journey across the sea, the sound of the seabirds calling and the party on the islands at the end of the journey.
The audience is encouraged to listen out for the gull calls from the clarinet during the sea crossing and the ensemble fanfares when land is spotted from the boat.
Following the interval, Edvard Grieg’s Norwegian Dances will exude joy and demonstrate so wonderfully the Nationalist style Grieg wrote in so well and his use of folk songs as the basis for his melodies.
The final work of this Scandinavian journey is Sibelius’ 5th symphony.
This work is poetic and helps the listener imagine being in the middle of the Finnish countryside and feeling uplifted by such a wonderful piece of music.
A spokesperson for the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra said: “The Norfolk Symphony Orchestra is grateful to the sponsor of their season, Adrian Flux Insurance Services, for their continued support.
“The orchestra is committed to producing music of the highest quality, performing varied and exciting programmes.
“ And once again the orchestra will be giving away 100 free tickets to under 18s throughout this season.
“ It is hugely encouraging for the orchestra to find that there are so many enthusiastic supporters for classical music amongst the young people of the county.”
