Review of King’s Lynn Players’ The Sound of Music: Production with ‘clever choreography’ and ‘outstanding’ orchestra deserved its standing ovation
Andy Tyler reviews the King’s Lynn Players’ production of The Sound of Music...
The King’s Lynn Players can justly celebrate their 80 years of entertaining us and their recent first-class production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's hugely popular and enduring musical, The Sound of Music, only goes to confirm their fine achievement.
First, I must praise all involved in the production, including those, of course, behind the scenes and the external supporters. All their hard work and inspiration have given much pleasure, and that was evident at the performance I attended where the cast was given a standing ovation which was well-deserved!
The show’s plot is based on the true story of the Von Trapp Family Singers and takes place just before, and during, the Second World War.
The relationship between Maria Rainer and captain Georg Von Trapp and the seven Von Trapp children is also movingly depicted in the production, with lighter moments also present in the theatrical mix.
Space limits mentioning many of the talented cast members regrettably, but Maddi Dawson’s portrayal of Maria Rainer was outstanding, Matt Austin as captain Georg conveyed his complex character subtly, and other leading characters played by Ellen Petterson-Brister, Logan Petterson-Cooper, Tim Webb, Poppy Guyatt and Amanda Mason all deserve praise.
The chorus, consisting of adults and children, performed with enthusiasm, and I must further praise all the young people involved, both in the chorus and the youngsters portraying the Von Trapp family children.
I enjoyed the much-loved musical numbers, all performed with panache, and the clever choreography. The orchestra was outstanding! The scene changes ran smoothly and the sets were well up to standard.
Thanks to director Sharon Fox, musical director Samantha Ashby, dance captain Poppy Guyatt, and all involved - they certainly did climb every mountain for us!
Here’s to The King’s Lynn Players’ next 80 years!
The show continues until Saturday.
