Plenty to look forward to in King’s Lynn and West Norfolk this spring
In his weekly That’s Entertainment column, Andy Tyler looks at events coming up in the borough...
The Christmas and New Year celebrations are now well behind us and although the future is always uncertain, I’m sure we can look forward to varied and high-quality entertainment here in Lynn and West Norfolk.
To start the ball rolling the latest brochure from Westacre Theatre was posted through my letter box recently and covers the spring season between now and late June. As usual, there’s a fine selection of events being held ranging from live theatre streamed from The National Theatre (Dear England and Vanya), family entertainment, (The Magic Bookmark), an Opera Party for Kids, and Anna Mudeka telling the remarkable life story of Miriam Makeba, South African singer, songwriter and civil rights activist.
Special activity sessions and film presentations are also included on the entertainment menu. For further details pick up one of Westacre’s physical programmes or visit www.westacretheatre.com
A new series of King’s Lynn Festival Coffee Concerts will be held starting on Friday, February 9, with talented Chinese pianist Richard Zhang performing. Concerts to follow will include music for cello, violin and string quartet. Tickets are on sale very soon. Lynn Town Hall should be the usual popular venue.
The main King’s Lynn Festival will be held this summer between July 14 and 27. Details to follow.
Combining music and film, The Norfolk Symphony Orchestra’s next concert is held on the afternoon of Sunday, January 21, with a 3.30pm start. The concert, held in Lynn’s Alive Corn Exchange, is entitled: From Vertigo to E.T. and features a wide variety of film music. One hundred free tickets are available for young concert goers. For enquiries and to book for this musical film feast contact 01553 764864.
Still talking movies, in the recent Golden Globe Movie and TV Awards, as expected, Oppenheimer, Barbie, Succession and The Crown all did very well, but this week I recommend the moving film, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, entitled simply One Life, telling the story of Sir Nicholas Winton who helped to save the lives of over 600 children from the Nazis in World War Two. Sir Anthony’s fine performance dominates the film but Johnny Flynn, as the younger Nicholas, and Helena Bonham Carter, as Nicholas’ mother, give sensitive performances. Playing at cinemas currently.
I hope you’ve not had enough of Agatha Christie-type crime stories recently as my book choice this week is an intriguing novel by Alexandra Benedict entitled The Christmas Jigsaw Murders. I leave you to put the pieces together!
The Melody All Sorts of Downham Market is a performing arts group aiming to support people with anxiety and hidden disabilities. It’s currently presenting its first pantomime production at Downham Town Hall between now and Sunday. Alice in Wonderland is the show, and tickets are available at No 8 The Old Book Shop, Downham or visit ticketsource.co.uk
Comedy is king at Lynn’s Alive Corn Exchange as there’ll be Comedy Clubs both for kids this Sunday at 2pm and for adults on the evening of Thursday, January 18, doors opening at 7pm with the comedy commencing at 8pm.
Events centring on Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd all are on The Corn Exchange’s menu. The current brochure detailing entertainment presented between now and April is available or visit kingslynncornexchange.co.uk for details.
Lastly, there’s exciting information about suggested routes linking Hanseatic towns and cities, including Lynn, of course, now available. Although mainly designed for cyclists, the routes can also be travelled by train or car. To find out more about these routes, especially if you’re hoping to get out and about soon, pick up a leaflet or visit hanse.org now.
