Review of Jesus Christ Superstar at Norwich Theatre Royal: Powerful show with energetic dancers and intense atmosphere remains as forceful as it was in 70s
Jesus Christ Superstar – Theatre Royal, Norwich
This rock opera, which looks at the last seven days of Jesus’ life and centres on Judas’ dissatisfaction with his work, burst into life more than 50 years ago and stands the test of time very well.
It is one of the best-known hits from the dynamic duo of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber - all catchy tunes and clever lyrics.
I loved the title song and I Don’t Know How to Love Him, beautifully sung by Hannah Richardson as Mary.
It’s an express train of a show, roaring through the songs at a terrific pace, with the on-stage band, dominated by an electric guitar, and energetic dancers not missing a beat.
It’s all dark and brooding, with searching spotlights and an ever-present cross on stage, creating an intense atmosphere from the start.
The momentum builds as Jesus (played by Ian McIntosh who has an astonishing vocal range) predicts his fate with Judas (Shem Omari James) quickly realising he’s only ever going to be remembered for his betrayal.
Look out for a very flamboyant Herod, played in heels and sequins by Timo Tatzber, who provides a much-needed spot of comic relief.
This is a powerful show, in all senses of the word, and remains as dramatic and forceful as it was in the 1970s.
This production comes from the open-air theatre at Regent’s Park which is such a great breeding ground for new shows.
Well done them.
The show continues until Saturday. Visit www.norwichtheatre.org
