At the end of a busy week, when temperatures had been high, it was a pleasure to be refreshed and invigorated by attending the recent King’s Lynn Festival recital given by Duo Hesperi, consisting of Mary Jannet-Leith ( recorders), and Thomas Allery (harpsichord), both musicians being members of Ensemble Hesperi, a group dedicated to showcasing baroque music through innovative programming and collaboration with other art forms.

The recital, held at All Saints Church, Lynn, consisted of music celebrating the musical relationship between London and Edinburgh, both main cultural centres in the 18th-century. English and Scottish composers worked in both cities professionally, and many Scottish composers settled in London.

Many Italian composers also enjoyed, and were intrigued by, Scots tunes, arranging and using them in their own work, as did Haydn and Beethoven.
