Review: King’s Lynn Music Society, Joan Rodgers and Rebecca Cohen, Lynn Town Hall

To begin at the end: Blah Blah Blah. No that’s not the review! Rather it is the title of the encore sung by the distinguished soprano Joan Rodgers at the concert held on Wednesday.

This brought to a close - and an artistic high point – the Society’s interesting and successful 2018/2019 season of concerts and talks.

If I guess right, Blah Blah Blah is from a Broadway musical and the words begin ‘I’ve written you a song, A beautiful routine’, and that is what the artists delivered: A beautiful and polished routine of lieder by Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann, and Richard Strauss; followed by a variety of art songs by Herbert Hughes, James MacMillan, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Dmitri Shostakovich, Anton Rubinstein and three of their lesser-known contemporaries.

All of this was most ably supported by pianist Rebecca Cohen, creating the mood and setting for each piece by weaving a fine web of notes around the melodies and coaxing a wide array of tones from the piano.
