REVIEW: On Your Feet! Theatre Royal Norwich
This new musical, all about the power music couple Gloria and Emilio Estefan, looks set to become a firm favourite as it boasts a terrific storyline, a great score and energetic dancing.
The couple, their love story and musical ability, are at the centre of the show which looks back over their 40-year career and charts their journey from fleeing Cuba for America as children to global fame, with hits such as Dr Beat, Conga and Rhythm is Gonna Get You.
They were the first crossover stars, dispelling thoughts that their music was ‘too Latin’ for mainstream American and British audiences.
Philippa Stefani is superb as Gloria, capturing her shyness and the joy she feels in her music, and George Ioannides is a very handsome and hard working Emilio - the driving force behind the couple’s success.
The show doesn’t shy away from Gloria’s near fatal road accident; she was badly injured when her tour bus was involved in a crash in 1990 and she needed extensive back surgery. But it ends with her triumphant return to the stage under a year later.
So while the show does have plenty of serious content, its joyful music and its Latin vibe can’t help but get you on your feet.
The show continues until Saturday.
