So much going on in West Norfolk

In his weekly That’s Entertainment column, Andy Tyler looks at the local arts scene.

As promised there’s no shortage of live events past, present and future to report on besides my film, book and streaming recommendations, so, I’ll get straight on with it!

Music first. If you enjoy good choral music, performed in style, then tomorrow night’s King’s Lynn’s Festival Chorus Concert is just right for you.

The Chorus will perform Brahms’ German Requiem, and Elgar’s Sea Pictures will also feature on the programme. Ben Horden conducts the chorus and distinguished soloists will perform. The concert will be held at Lynn Minster, starting at 7pm. Contact the box office on 01553 764864 for tickets.

I’m pleased to see another favourite piece of mine will be performed by the chorus on Sunday, July 21. The venue is St Nicholas’ Chapel, 4pm the start time, and the work to be performed is Rossini’s delightful Petite Messe Solennelle, an excellent choice! Tickets can also be booked by contacting 01553 764864.

I’m sorry to report the planned violin and piano recital to be given at St Mary’s Church, Brancaster tomorrow has had to be postponed due to ill health. Do visit the website
for Music in the Burnhams to see details of other exciting concerts and recitals scheduled shortly or ring 07989 177079.

There’s just three days left to view an intriguingly original art exhibition of paintings, textiles and other phenomena at Lynn’s Custom House. The artist, whose fine work is on display, is Deborah Sedgwick, and ‘The Wash’ is the title given to work connecting laundry, the Wash river and a thin watery body of pigment to cover an artist’s picture; water, of course, being the common denominator. Deborah has exhibited her work widely and has received several awards, and purchased for private and public collections. The exhibition is open between 10am and 4pm, and closes on Sunday.

Also on Sunday at 2.30pm, Brian Butcher gives a presentation entitled : ‘A Blickling Soap Opera’ at South Wootton Village Hall, Church Lane, South Wootton. Sounds like an interesting local topic. It’s just £8 entry for non-members of The West Norfolk Association of National Trust Members, £4 for local group members. Why not join?

A film to look out for, just released, is Monkey Man, directed by actor Dev Patel. This, the first film he has directed and co-written, is set in Mumbai, is vibrant, and has down-to-earth contemporary themes. Dev Patel, of course, came to Lynn some years ago to film parts of The Personal History of David Copperfield, which was a success.

I also recommend: ‘Scoop’, telling the background story of The Duke of York’s encounter with Emily Maitlis and others from the BBC’s Newsnight show, now streaming on Netflix.

Both Historians Mary Beard and Bettany Hughes regularly appear on TV and for my book recommendation this week I suggest taking a look at the books available written by them and pick what appeals. Anyone interested in ancient history won’t be disappointed!

Shakespeare will be celebrated in Lynn with a Big Birthday Bash on Sunday, April 28 at St George’s Guildhall between 11am and 3pm. Entry is free and there’s Tudor themed event activities for all ages. A sensational Shakespearean bash, no doubt!

I was pleased once again to meet some of the Pilgrims making their way to Walsingham at Lynn’s Red Mount recently. They stop off at The Red Mount annually, so let’s hope this iconic local building is also open regularly to the general public soon.

Lastly, a reminder to look out for events taking place at our local museums.
I notice a few more ‘True’s Talks’ are being held at The True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum soon. Contact 01553 770479 for details of the talks and other great events.
