Review: Estevao Devides at King's Lynn Music Society

More news, no ads

They came from near and far, old and young alike, to hear the classical guitar player Estevao Devides.

It was the final concert of the King's Lynn Music Society's present season at the Town Hall, on Wednesday.

In an understated manner Estevao entertained his willing audience with music and words filled with authentic emotion.

The great names were there on the concert list: Tarrega, Villa Lobos and Albeniz; less prominent names such as Torroba or Jobim and the unexpected, Led Zeppelin and Ed Sheeran, in a programme that spanned many genres and periods.

The first half more orthodox, the second diverse, Pachelbel's Canon rubbing shoulders with Sting's Fields of Gold, followed by my favourite of the night Stanley Myers' Cavatina. The concert was a triumph.

It rounded off a season that began in the shadow of Covid, gathered pace, and finished with brilliance.

The coming season begins with Ralph Vaughan Williams A Life Through Music, on September 21, 7.30pm at the Town Hall.
