Review of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Norwich Theatre Royal
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - Theatre Royal, Norwich
This well-known favourite was the first creation by the legendary partnership of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice more than 50 years ago as a project for a school.
It remains as much fun now as it was then as we follow the ups and downs of Joseph’s life - and that multicoloured coat.
I thoroughly enjoyed the light-hearted approach taken by this touring production, which has West End star Adam Filipe in the title role.
He has a voice to die for - full of emotion and perfect diction.
I also enjoyed the Narrator role, played by Broadway’s Christina Bianco, less so as it was a much expanded part, and the show seems to centre around her a bit too much.
But she is undoubtedly a big talent, from singing to tap dancing and playing the harmonica!
And Alex Woodward makes the most of his relatively small role as the Pharaoh, playing him as The King, aka Elvis, and bringing a bit of Las Vegas to the night!
Several roles are played by children, including some of the brothers, which was another slightly odd adaptation, but hey, go with the flow!
The show features many classics, including Any Dream Will Do, Close Every Door, and There’s One More Angel in Heaven - and the costumes, set, and that dreamcoat all add up to a great night at the theatre.
The show continues until May 10. Visit www.norwichtheatre.org
