Andy Tyler reviews King’s Lynn Community Choir Winter Concert: ‘Special seasonal event was presented with passion and precision’
Reviewer Andy Tyler shares his thoughts on a recent concert at a Lynn chapel…
Atrocious weather conditions were soon forgotten by the enthusiastic and capacity audience who attended the recent King’s Lynn Community Choir Winter Concert held at Lynn’s historic St Nicholas’ Chapel.
The special seasonal event was presented with passion and precision by the choir, who were joined by Lewis Meehan, Timpani, members of The Lynn Town Band, and local guest instrumentalists, some players coming from The Norfolk Symphony Orchestra, collaborating for the first time.
Young musicians from Springwood High School, Charlize and Chantelle also took part.
David Hill supported the choir and ensemble on the piano and organ as usual with great prowess, and the impressive musical forces were directed by distinguished composer, choir director, musical educationalist, and talented arranger, Charlotte Sinassi-Hill. A number of excellent soloists also sang.
The rich and varied programme consisted of several popular, and not so well known pieces, including Edelweiss, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, (arranged by Charlotte), and other arrangements by her and David Hill.
Wish You Were Here was included, and dedicated to choir member, Trevor Buxton who could not sing due to illness, and the Ukranian Carol of the Bells, (Shchedryk), was confidently sung in the original language by the choir.
Pieces by Vivaldi, Carl Orff, Elgar, Rutter, Chilcott and others were included and audience participation was encouraged by Mr.Andy Chase, the evening’s compère and by Charlotte, in the singing of some traditional and well-known carols during the evening.
The concert certainly lifted the spirits and ended with the appropriate encore: Goodnight by The Beatles.
The charities supported by the choir are King’s Lynn Food Bank and Norfolk Blood Bikes. The choir is always happy to welcome new members (tenors and basses especially), and will hold a Summer Concert on June 14 at St Nicholas’ Chapel next year.
Thanks to all concerned for a splendid concert, do visit the choir’s website for further details: www.kingslynncommunitychoir.com
