King's Lynn Springwood High School put on for free Raymond Briggs' The Snowman whose song Walking in the Air was popularised by Aled Jones
Springwood students are ensuring everyone gets to celebrate this festive season, by making tickets to their Christmas performance of The Snowman free of charge this weekend.
Musicians at Springwood High School, which is a member of the West Norfolk Academies Trust, are giving a live orchestral performance of the soundtrack of the Christmas classic, while the animated film is being screened in the school’s Peter Hopkin’s Hall – and members of the community are invited to attend for free.
Springwood’s director of music, Robin Norman, explained: “After careful consideration, we have decided that it has been a tough year.
“The cost of living is really starting to ‘bite’, and this is our opportunity to give the people of West Norfolk our ‘Christmas gift’ – a chance to come along and just relax for an hour in a fantastic Christmas event that is suitable for the whole family.”
There will be two performances on Saturday, December 17 – one at 1.30pm and the other at 3.30pm.
As well as providing the music to the film, which will be narrated by drama teacher Mrs Burchell, Springwood’s orchestra will be playing Christmas classics such as ‘Here Comes Santa Claus’ and selections from Frozen in the hour-long, family-friendly show.
Three students will also perform The Snowman’s iconic theme tune, ‘Walking in the Air’, which was first popularised by singer Aled Jones in 1985, three years after the animated film The Snowman was released.
Mr Norman added: “This promises to be the ultimate Christmas event that is suitable for the whole family.
“We would love people to come along, relax, and just enjoy the experience, singing along with some of their favourite festive songs and delighting at the timeless, modern classic The Snowman.”
