That’s Entertainment: Andy Tyler discusses upcoming events in and around King’s Lynn, including exhibitions, concerts and film recommendations
In his weekly That’s Entertainment column, Andy Tyler looks at some exciting upcoming events…
I hope all readers of the column enjoyed a happy and peaceful Christmas and New Year despite all the negative aspects of contemporary life.
I am sure we can look forward to much enjoyable and quality entertainment locally, and beyond, in the coming year.
I spent time in Devon recently and noticed ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ is playing at Torquay’s Princess Theatre and ‘Sleeping Beauty’ at Paignton’s Palace Theatre – you have just a day or so to catch one of the performances if you are visiting the English Riviera.
The world-famous author Agatha Christie was born in Torquay and I can recommend a fascinating series of three programmes about her life presented by historian Lucy Worsley entitled, Agatha Christie: Lucy Worsley on the Mystery Queen. It’s well-researched and available to view now on BBC iPlayer.
I was very impressed with the newly-opened Chequer House Gallery which I visited just before Christmas. The West Norfolk Artists Association’s opening exhibition runs until February 23.
Entry is free and opening times are Wednesday to Sunday, 10am-4pm. The variety and quality of the artwork on display is stunning and I do hope many people will pay this excellent venue a visit and enjoy viewing the exhibition as much as I did.
If you are visiting the King Street part of Lynn, nearby are The Greyfriars Art Space, situated on the ground floor of The Custom House, and The GroundWork Gallery on Purfleet Street.
The GroundWork Gallery is closed now until March and the new exhibition Plant Power will start its new season.
And so to music. The Norfolk Symphony Orchestra’s next concert is to be held on the afternoon of Sunday, January 19, starting at 3.30pm.
Lynn’s Alive Corn Exchange is the venue and the programme is entitled: Sparks of Inspiration. Uplifting music by Rimsky-Korsakov, Bizet, Milhaud and Gershwin will be performed.
Contact the box office on: 01553 764864 for tickets – 100 free tickets for young concert-goers should be available, a maximum of three per adult. Definitely a firm date for your musical diary.
If, like me, you wonder what all the fuss is about in relation to the bestselling novel Butter by Asako Yuzuki and translated by Polly Barton, why not give it a try?
I have started reading it and am intrigued by this Japanese thriller, now available in paperback. It’s Waterstone’s Book Of The Year, and definitely suited to those interested in Japanese food.
If you enjoy a good romantic love story my film recommendation of the week is We Live in Time, in cinemas now. It’s a love story where time plays an important and tragic part.
The mood during the Christmas period was certainly uplifted by many carol concerts and services. I especially praise the events held by local groups and organisations.
The King’s Lynn Festival Chorus, King’s Lynn Community Choir and Guildhall Singers all gave superb concerts; we look forward to their performances in the coming year.
As always praise must go to Lynn’s Alive Corn Exchange theatre and cinema, Hunstanton’s Princess Theatre and Westacre Theatre, as well as the many other places where exceptional live entertainment, films and streaming are presented. Do spend time exploring what’s coming our way in future months.
Lastly, two items to mention; Don’t forget the Lynn Original Flea Market is held on Saturday, January 11, between 9am and 3pm. There must be a bargain waiting for you.
Also, advance notice of the coming historic Lynn Mart, in mid-February. Not long to wait now.
