Steel Magnolias has been a hit on the big screen with stars like Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts and Sally Field playing in leading roles.
And now it’s coming to the stage at Swaffham in April as the next production by Swaffham Players, with Marcie Loan taking on the director’s role ably assisted by John Hooker.
As well as being the silver screen hit, Steel Magnolias was also a very successful stage play by Robert Harling.
In fact the play is very personal as it was based on the playwright’s sister who died following a kidney transplant operation and really left her young son with no mum.
Set in a beauty parlour in Louisiana, this hilarious and touching play for six women takes the audience through four scenes spanning three years as the staff and customers engage in small-town gossip.
But then a deep strength and purposefulness emerges when Shelby, a diabetic, becomes ill following a kidney transplant operation.
A tag line often seen for Steel Magnolias is: “The only play that will make you laugh and cry” which is so true.
The cast includes Karen Nye as Truvy, Marcie Loan as Shelby, Haley Hoare as Annelle, Maureen Silver as Clairee, Marilyn Pruden as Ouiser and Sue Baxter as M’Lynn.
Steel Magnolias is taking place at The Barn Theatre in Swaffham from Thursday to Saturday, April 16-18, nightly at 7.30pm.
Tickets for the play, at £8, are available from Ceres Bookshop in Swaffham or from Marcie Loan directly on 07867943102 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Swaffham Players are particularly grateful to College of West Anglia students Holly Day and Hatti Tooke who will be styling the hair for the cast and are freely providing their services for rehearsals and the play.
