A monthly table-top sales held at Discover Downham has returned as a popular event on the third Sunday of each month.

This month, on Sunday, it will be the first time Discover Downham has held a tabletop sale since February 2020.

It’s a long time since volunteers first started tabletops at the centre.

Originally held in the derelict firebay the sales have helped raise money to secure a grant to renovate and adapt the Old Fire Station into a Heritage and Learning Centre.

Successfully raising £650,000 through grants and fundraising, has eventually resulted in the bright, modern, well equipped centre that is in Downham Market.

The conditions in the centre today are a stark contrast to then, but tabletops are still an important part in raising money nowadays to help keep the centre running.

The event is from 9.30am to noon and this month there is a selection of stalls including a large second hand book stand with everything at £1, a jewellery stand, preserves, crafts and general bric a brac.

Refreshments are available and can be enjoyed outside in the courtyard on a nice day.

The centre were fortunate enough this year to receive a grant of £1,000 from West Norfolk Council's Community Grant Scheme.

Councillor Don Tyler supported the centre’s application which enabled the purchase of outside furniture as part of the grant expenditure.

The rest of the grant will be spent on producing the next temporary display at the Centre from July.

Called The Best Years of Your Life Downham Market Schools it is sure to be of great interest and Discover Downham are hoping local residents will come along and help identify some of the faces on the many school photos that will be on display and perhaps enjoy a game of hopscotch.

Don Tyler said. "I was pleased to donate the money to this project, as I think it is important that we keep the history of our town alive and relevant and that children are able to research their own past."

Christine Austin, trustee, said: "We were really delighted that councillor Tyler decided that we should be chosen to receive the £1,000 grant.

"The centre is entirely self funded and run by volunteers and it was a great boost to know that the centre’s work is recognised and appreciated."

Tables can be booked in advance and can be hired for £6 by calling into the centre, telephoning 01366 384428 or emailing info@discoverdownham.org.uk.
