Review of Singin’ in the Rain at Norwich Theatre Royal: Top-notch production from Norfolk and Norwich Operatic Society leaves you with a glorious feeling
Singin in the Rain - Theatre Royal, Norwich
What a glorious feeling this top-notch production leaves you with. The Norfolk and Norwich Operatic Society celebrates their 100th anniversary with a sparkling production of this evergreen musical, made famous by the 1952 movie which starred Gene Kelly.
Now primary school teacher Alex Green steps into his shoes and does a terrific job as the handsome silver screen star Don Lockwood. He’s the ultimate triple threat - he can sing, dance and act and the role is said to be one of his favourites.
Kimberley Mason plays the role of Kathy Seldon which was performed by Debbie Reynolds, and she’s equally as impressive as the girl with the voice. Dan Moore as Cosmo Brown and Emily Johnson as Lina Lamont complete the lineup of leading characters but this is very much an ensemble piece which includes a 17-piece orchestra who perform live on stage which is a real bonus.
Look out for those iconic numbers - You Are My Lucky Star, Good Morning, Moses Supposes and, of course, the title track which sees the front couple of rows getting more than a little wet.
This is an ambitious show, with strong production values, that easily sits alongside other professional shows which visit the theatre. Kudos to all involved.
The show finished its run at the Theatre Royal on Saturday. For other shows in Norwich, visit www.norwichtheatre.org
