King’s Lynn festival concert brings ‘passion and sensitivity’ says reviewer Andy Tyler

Reviewer Andy Tyler shares his thoughts on the recent Lynn’s Festival Coffee Concert...

The latest King’s Lynn Festival Coffee Concert featured Toby White, cello, and Ryan Drucker, piano and their recital’s programme was a well-balanced one, consisting of two romantic pieces: Robert Schumann’s Fairytale Pictures, Op.113, completed in 1851, and Brahms 1st Cello Sonata in E minor, Op.38, completed as we know it in 1866.

Between those two pieces, our talented young musicians played Beethoven’s delightful and inventive seven variations on Mozart’s duet from The Magic Flute: Bei Mannern, Welch Liebe Fuhlen.

I was pleased to get to hear the Schumann pieces especially as they were new to me, and all the music was played with technical assurance, passion, and sensitivity.

The award-winning duo have performed widely throughout the UK, and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and Medici TV. A recording of their performances is expected this year.

Toby White has appeared in King’s Lynn previously, but both he and Ryan Drucker are welcome back anytime as far as I’m concerned!

The next Coffee Concert will be given by Anna Im, violin, and Chiao- Ying Chang, piano on Friday, March 22, 11am at Lynn Town Hall.
