Arts Society King’s Lynn lecture on Three Grandes Dames of Impressionism: Marie Bracquemond, Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt

The first lecture of the new year from The Arts Society King’s Lynn, TASKL, is on Thursday, January 12 starting at 2pm and will be looking at “The Three Grandes Dames of Impressionism”.

The Impressionists were an innovative and radical group of artists who took Paris by storm in the 1870s. Using new colours and techniques, they created paintings of modern life which shocked and horrified the art establishment.

From the start the group included women artists, but their contribution to Impressionism has often been overshadowed by their male contemporaries.

Marie Bracquemond, Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt all exhibited regularly at the Impressionist exhibitions and they were given the title “Les Trois Grandes Dames d’Impressionisme” by the art critic Gustave Geffroy as long ago as 1894.

This lecture will discuss their lives and work, revealing their skill and originality as well as their willingness to take risks, despite the additional obstacles they faced as women.

The lecturer is Sarah Burles who studied the History of Art at Cambridge University and University College London. She went on to have a career in museum and gallery education, including at the Fitzwilliam Museum for many years. Sarah also runs art tours and courses in and around East Anglia as well as in Italy, France, Germany, Belgium and America.
