Review of New Adventures’ Edward Scissorhands at Norwich Theatre Royal: Compelling production will carve a place in your heart
Edward Scissorhands by New Adventures - Theatre Royal, Norwich
This is a touching and compelling version of the 1990 Tim Burton movie about an unfinished artificial humanoid whose eccentric inventor dies before he can complete him so he is left with incredible scissor hands.
Despite his rather scary appearance, he’s a gentle soul who struggles to settle into the local community and we feel his bewilderment as he treads a thin line between love and tragedy.
The Gothic romantic fairytale movie achieved cult status as it starred Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder, and this reimagining comes from Sir Matthew Bourne and his New Adventures team who always offer something a little different, from beautiful music by Danny Elfman and Terry Davies to intricately choreographed ensemble numbers - and plenty of funny little touches like some dancing topiary.
You’ll also love one of Edward’s vampy neighbours Joyce, artfully played by Stephanie Billers, who tries her best to corrupt him!
Liam Mower is fantastic as Edward - how he dances with those enormous blades I know not, and Ashley Shaw as his love interest Kim is a powerhouse of a performer.
It’s a show that will most definitely carve a place in your heart!
The show continues until Saturday. Visit www.norwichtheatre.org
