King’s Lynn man Christopher Hewitt in court after fight on town street
A 38-year-old was fined in court after taking a chair from a shop and trying to hit another man over the head during a street brawl.
Lynn man Christopher Hewitt, of no fixed abode, appeared at the town’s magistrates’ court on Thursday.
He was sentenced for using threatening words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of or provoke unlawful violence – an offence he committed on February 28 this year.
Hewitt originally pleaded not guilty to the matter and was due to go before a judge and jury, but changed that plea on the day of his trial. The matter was then adjourned for a pre-sentence report to be carried out.
On Thursday, crown prosecutor Colette Harper told magistrates that police were called to a fight in Lynn involving Hewitt on the day of his offence.
The incident was caught on CCTV, and Ms Harper said the footage would “speak for itself”.
Magistrates were shown the “heated argument” in which Hewitt could be seen punching another man and picking up a chair from a nearby shop to try and hit him over the head with.
Ms Harper added that the matter was witnessed by “a large number of other people”.
In mitigation, Charlotte Winchester said Hewitt and the other man involved had known each other from a very young age – and that the defendant’s current girlfriend was the other man’s former partner.
“Mr Hewitt is very sorry for his behaviour on that day,” the solicitor said.
“He let his emotions get the better of him.”
She added that Hewitt is “engaging well” with probation services as he carries out a community order handed to him the last time he was sentenced for a set of offences.
“I ask that you don’t interfere with the progress that he is making,” Miss Winchester added.
Magistrates, led by Alan Hayes, decided not to intervene with Hewitt’s order, and instead fined him £50 for his February 28 offence.
He will also pay £105 in legal costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
