Fakenham business owner opens first store Claire Howard Jewellery in former J Metcalf’s building

After years of successful trading, a businesswoman has opened the doors to her first handmade jewellery shop.

Claire Howard Jewellery welcomed dozens to the launch of her Fakenham store in what used to be the J Metcalf building on Saturday, August 17.

The former primary school teacher has been making pieces inspired by the Norfolk landscape full-time since 2015, when her son started education.

“I wanted to be one of those parents who could do things with their child rather than be a teacher,” she said.

“It was a good opportunity to do something with a hobby that had gotten way out of control.”

Up until now, Claire was selling her products at craft fairs and pop-up shops but has recently felt the need for more room.

“Selling at pop-ups had always been really good but the one disadvantage was that I could never work in them.

“When I saw the old Metcalf’s building, there was enough space for my jewellery bench and to run workshops, it felt like it was perfect.”

Opening day saw the ribbon cut by her good friend Heidi Swain, a best-selling author from Norfolk.

“It was a really good day and very busy,” Claire added.

“I was quite overwhelmed by how many people came - it was wonderful.”

The businesswoman hopes that her store will get people high street shopping in the town again.

“I think there are a lot of people in Fakenham who want to see the town regenerated a bit and brought back to life,” she said.

As well as livening up the centre, the shop will also host workshops and have a brand-new hydraulic press fitted.

“It all just feels right.”
