King’s Lynn Lithuanian Society new folk dance group celebrates Midsummer at Wisbech event
The Lithuanian society in Lynn recently celebrated Midsummer, also commonly known as Saint John’s Eve in Lithuania.
Midsummer is an important date for Lithuanians as festivities are held throughout the country in every town, city, and village and it is even a national holiday.
For most Lithuanians, it signifies the bliss of summer, traditions, and a special connection between people and nature.
This year, the festivities were particularly special as the society recently established its own folk dance group Karaliūnai which derived its name by translating and creatively adapting the town name King‘s Lynn into the Lithuanian language.
The dance group worked extremely hard to prepare for its first official performance in Wisbech, where the festivities took place at Strattons Farm Campsite on June 24.
They are looking forward to performing all over the country in the future and hoping to collaborate not only with other Lithuanian communities across the UK but with everyone interested in west Norfolk and beyond.
Eglė Mordasaitė, member of the group, said: “The folk dance group started on March 3 and they have a rehearsal space on the first floor at Raminta Extra food store.
“The owner kindly agreed to let the group meet there every Friday.”
