Former Downham Market Academy teacher Rachel Bickford launches OTTO Holiday Club to help families as government brings tougher penalties to parents
A former West Norfolk teacher hopes to find the best holiday deals for families following the government’s announcement of higher fines for taking children out of school.
Rachel Bickford, who taught Music at Downham Market Academy, is on a mission to help millions of parents across the country avoid premium prices for holidays out of term time.
Her project, OTTO Holiday Club, is set on providing affordable options and travel advice so parents are not forced to pay inflated prices when vacationing during the school holidays.
“Big companies shamelessly hike prices during school holidays, squeezing every last penny out of hardworking staff in schools and families,” she said.
“This greed overshadows the smaller, independent, family-run businesses that keep their prices fair and consistent all year round.”
However, since the government announced harsher fines for taking children out of school during term time, Rachel has been more determined than ever to find a solution for families.
As of this month, parents can now face fines of £80 per child, per parent, per absence, doubling to £160 if not paid within 21 days.
Tougher penalties include prosecution, fines of up to £2,500 or possible jail sentences for repeat offenders or those who fail to pay.
The changes are said to improve school attendance and address what has been described as the “attendance crisis” in schools.
“I strongly believe that cost should not be prohibitive to creating experiences and memories to treasure,” Rachel said.
The 42-year-old believes there will be lots of parents who are fiercely fighting against the new rules but says that with a government intent on not changing their position, there are better ways to beat the system so everyone can travel more affordably.
OTTO has been growing on social media and now has some 1,400 Facebook followers who know Rachel as the “Holiday Fairy Godmother”.
Carole, a client who was able to get a cruise deal, thanked the ex-teacher and said: "I've just started working in a school so have had to stick rigidly to school holiday dates.
“Normally, I could take kids out a day or two early which previously made all the difference, so I'm really happy with this cruise offer. Thanks."
